Lodgers album Cover by Duffy
Lodger Album Cover Shoot
Duffy’s fourth shoot with David in 1979 was in Duffy’s north London studio for the Lodger album cover where David wanted to capture the look of a falling man. Duffy organised that wires were attached to David’s face and then gently tugged to contort it as if he were indeed falling from a great height. That morning David arrived in the studio with a bad burn on his hand from a coffee spill and felt that his bandaged hand would add to a layer of distress to the photo. Derek Boshier provided the graphics for the album which led to Boshier and Bowie continuing to work together over the years. This higher resolution image was distressed by Duffy using chemicals to add distortion around the edge of the frame. Bowie decided to use an enlarged test image over the finished product. More images from this shoot are in the book Duffy Bowie:Five Sessions by Kevin Cann & Chris Duffy.
