Real name Norma Jean Baker Mortenson, Marilyn Monroe was raised by a mother on the verge of madness, who had frequent stays in psychiatric hospitals; she never knew her father's name. At the age of 19, dyed blonde, she began her career as a model for the photographer André de Dienes, her Pygmalion and her lover. Endowed with an advantageous physique, she takes charge of her life, determined to get out of her poor environment. She became an avid reader, took comedy and literature courses at the University of Los Angeles. In 1948, Columbia gave her a chance. She signed a six-month contract, and appeared for the first time on screen in Dangerous Years, in 1947.
